Synopsis: The relationship between wolf and deer populations has been the subject of interest
and debate for decades.
Recently, there has been renewed interest in the topic given the decrease in deer populations in
northern Minnesota—and subsequently deer hunting success. Join Tom Gable, Project Lead of
the Voyageurs Wolf Project, as he does a deep dive into the data on the relationship between
wolf and deer populations in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem and in northern Minnesota as
well as the role of wolves on deer hunter success. Further, Tom will examine how a recreational
hunting and trapping season of wolves would likely influence wolf populations and how such
management actions would impact deer populations and deer hunting success.
